Sometimes one thing leads to another

This summer I was invited to participate in an upcoming art exhibition at the Duluth Art Institute celebrating 100 years of Finnish American Culture.

Being honored and excited to be a part of this exhibition I began to do some research into the Finnish migration to the United States and this led me to other Finnish American artists.

The first thing that came to mind was to use a sketch I had put together using "Clash Royale" as inspiration for a self portrait. "Clash Royale" is a mobile game application designed by "Supercell" which is based in Helsinki, Finland.

I started transferring the image into a painting. As I began to work my way through the painting I began to realize that it did not have the impact that I had intended, but already having invested several hours into creating the work I decided to stick it out.

I began to research the Finnish migration to the America's. This research led me to other Finnish American artists. Among the list I was surprised to see David Lynch's name appear. During some of my formative years as an artist I remember the Lynch's work being very influenced on me as I began a quest into the Avant garde.

On a trip to my local goodwill I found a  white shadowbox with a sand dollar as its focal point. After I got it home I realized I could create my own black/white lodge. I quickly set aside the cartoon self portrait and began to create my work for the exhibition paying homage to Lynch, The Duluth Depot and the art I create.

This new work will be on display the month of December at the Duluth Art Institute. Stop in and check it out.

Opening was a great success! Special thanks to Marlene Wisuri and Angel Sarkela-Saur

For organizing the exhibit and DAI for the support.
